RMIT University’s Centre for Urban Research is pleased to invite you to Associate Professor Marco Amati’s seminar, Exhibitions, Patrick Geddes and Urban Learning.

Seminar Brief

Patrick Geddes (1854-1932), iconoclastic biologist and sociologist, and well known as one of the fathers of modern town planning. During a remarkable eclectic, idiosyncratic career spanning biology, sociology and planning, Geddes was a witness to and an employer of, awareness-raising and consultative techniques that spanned the period of early modernism. This seminar argues that his exhibitionary philosophy, while deriving from the age of great 19th century exhibitions, anticipates community engagement and current theories of urban learning.
