Join us for the launch of two landmark reports by Rail Futures Institute and the RMIT Centre of Urban Research which set a powerful and detailed vision for regional rail, regional growth and land use planning for Victoria.

To be launched by the Hon. Tim Fischer, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, the reports InterCity: How Regional Rail can Re-balance Population Growth and Create a ‘State of Cities’ in Victoria produced by the Rail Futures Institute and Alternative Futures for Melbourne’s Peri-Urban Regions produced by RMIT’s Centre for Urban Research, together:

  • Provide an urgent call for population growth to be rebalanced from Melbourne to regional Victoria and from rural areas to townships.
  • Demonstrate how Investment in faster, more frequent and reliable regional rail is the key to driving regional growth and creating a “State of Cities” in Victoria.
  • Show how to achieve large-scale development and population growth in regional centres, within township growth boundaries and respecting heritage and amenity.
  • Reveal insights into regional and rural land supply and demand.
  • Reveal a detailed blueprint for regional rail development over a 25 year period
  • Fill a major gap in Victorian transport and land use planning, one which will become more apparent without urgent government action
